Computer-Generated Social Media Influencer: Lil Miquela

Claiming to be from Los Angeles, Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated social media influencer. Miquela was created by Trevor McFedries and Sara Decou as a digital art project for their startup Brud.

Who is Lil Miquela?

Miquela, better known as Lil Miquela, is an Instagram model, activist and musician. In addition to Instagram, Lil Miquela is very active on Twitter and Tumblr and even has two singles on Spotify.

Lil Miquela, who considers herself a 19-year-old Brazilian-American social media influencer and fashionista has been an internet marvel. Miquela now has over 1.5 million followers on Instagram despite being a virtually-created personality.

How Influential is Lil Miquela?

Since launching Miquela’s Instagram account on April 22, 2016, it has been rumored that Miquela is a composite of a real human woman. Therefore, this could explain her digital renderings’ uncanny human likeness. Miquela interacts with real people, in real-life places and wears real-life clothes off the rack. She also has partnerships with brands like Prada. Miquela has done interviews with major publications like Business of Fashion, King Kong, Paper and V.

The influencer recently has used her power for good, encouraging her followers to donate to Black Girls Code and be better allies to transgender people. However it’s not hard to imagine another CGI account using its influence to spread hate or political discord.

How do I create my own Lil Miquela?

According to anonymous sources close to Miquela, there is at least one real-life human woman as well as one real-life human man involved in the her creation of her content. But the exact size of her team at Brud and their roles have not been confirmed.

Brud recently received $6 million in funding from Silicon Valley investors. So Preston Jessee, a motion graphics artist from The Cut, decided to see just how difficult it was to develop his own CGI avatar. Jessee did this by showcasing the all steps needed to complete the process. See the above video from The Cut to review the process.
